“The works of Karol Bąk seem to be full of contradictions – on the one hand there are static figures, and on the other they have raging, buzzing or simply unrealistic backgrounds. This reality is stunning – an unspecified space of paintings filled with threads, cobwebs, materials and veils. The correlate of this intricately woven form is the woman which is the content of painting. “Joanna Gardzińska
Karol Bąk – born in 1961 in Koło, an outstanding Polish painter, illustrator and graphic artist. A graduate of the Secondary School of Fine Arts in Poznań and the local State Higher School of Fine Arts (currently the University of Arts in Poznań), whose achievements include several hundred oil paintings, which constitute the largest, but not the only, part of his artistic activity.
The artist also creates graphics, ink drawings, pastel portraits, pencil sketches, and wall frescoes. These works differ not only in technique, but also in the way they are perceived. Oil painting can be considered the brighter and cheerful side of the artistic soul, while drawings and sketches are the darker and more sinister aspect of creativity. Both of these elements are combined in thematic cycles that have been created for years – Sailing Ships and Dialogues. Apart from them, the oil paintings also include Cocoons, Halos, Four Elements, Angels and Demons, Judith and Salome, Prima Mobilia, as well as a series of Nocturnes inspired by the music of Fryderyk Chopin, on the occasion of the Chopin Year 2010, or Arte Factum…
The main content of the Artist’s work are women. They delight with their beauty and sensuality, arouse admiration, but sometimes also anxiety, emerge from mists or cobwebs. The works are distinguished by well-selected colors, extraordinary realism of the characters and an aura of magic. And if we add the artist’s excellent skills, we already know that we are deales with art at the highest level.
The work of Karol Bąk successfully represents Poland on the international arena of contemporary art. The artist has had many exhibitions, both in Poland and abroad – Amsterdam, Rotterdam, London, Rome, New York, Las Vegas, Taipei.., and his works can be found in museums and private collections on all continents.
