Record on the Polish auction market!
FORTUNE WAS PAID FOR MATEJKA’S PICTURE!
A private collector paid almost PLN 7 million for the painting by Jan Matejko: “Portrait of Prof. Dr. Karol Gilewski” from 1872. Thus, the work became the most expensive painting sold at auction in the history of the Polish auction market!
– This is a well-deserved and even awaited record for such an unprecedented work of art. The power of the cultural value of this work is invaluable, which is why we dream that it will find its place in the museum deposit. This record is broken in very uncertain times, which confirms the strength of the alternative investment market – said Iwona Buchner Grzesiak, president of the Polswiss Art Auction House.
“Portrait of Prof. Dr. Karol Gilewski”, which was created in 1872, is an example of the best portrait painting by Jan Matejko, considered the greatest Polish artist of the 19th century. The painting was lost after the exhibition of Polish art in Vienna in 1915 and was recognized for 100 years was for missing until reappearing abroad in 2015.
The record was set on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 without the participation of the public.
